"oh look! your cork!"
(or various other comments with sick connotations involving "corks" fitting into -boiling tube- "holes") has almost become a ritual at bio spa nowadays.
this is what happens when you sit with 3 boys.
im not denying that ill miss all of them though, when this year slips away from us and we all end up in different continents/ countries/ land masses. how am i supposed to laugh at their nice shiny bald heads when im not in town! ):

10:00 PM
just got home from the uni talk. twas enlightening and frightening at the same time, and like everytime i think about such things, utterly exhausting.
in fact, utterly exhausting (i know this is a fairly common comment here) pretty much sums up my week. idk why, ive been sleeping at appropriate times, and havent been working particularly hard (ok, subjective), but ive been in pain most of this week cos of aching muscles throughout the upper back. rare, since i normally dont feel physically uncomfortable. and physical pain = brain unable to function = very low efficiency ):
tmr there is car wash, and then next week is the last mad rush for sats, combined with another mad rush for chem/bio spas the week after. grah i hate this pace of life, but as far as my life goes having a single goal per week is perhaps quite manageable. not having time to myself pisses me off though, because its been: school- study- dinner-more study- sleep at appropriate time (which is surprisingly, a very tiring thing to do consecutively), repeat for the past few weeks. i can feel the need to have Personal Time pressing into me, almost literally, not to mention i so need to catch up with some people (ie. ram/ gan/ geoff/ HUMAN BEINGS IN GENERAL)
so i really need a good rest this weekend if i hope to last till like. chem spa week.
on a positive side however, i can feel myself getting into this groove and so far i havent felt the burn/ got lazy and slacked yet. the mindset is there, and thats quite an acheivement.
i apologise if this posts is windy and makes no sense. i am tired.

today is earth day, so the topic in question is PLASTIC!
plastic is ubiquitous these days, and plastic water bottles are everywhere! im sure we've all heard horror stories of how poisonous chemicals can contaminate your water, and the Times article on it did nothing but worsen my fears, so i made a little trip around the internet to find out more.
check out the bottom of your bottle! you'll probably find a triangle with a number inside. this denotes the type of plastic used in making the bottle. the most common numbers (based on a little survey of some classmates' bottles) are #4 and #7. luckily, #2, #4, and #5 are pretty safe plastics with low leaching. however, #7 contains a chemical called BPA (bisphenol A) which is very similar to synthetic estrogen. thus, it is easily taken up by our bodies and can cause all kinds of funny things including cancer and decreased testosterone levels. those hard plastic columbia bottles are #7s. luckily, nalgene makes bottles that do not contain BPA, so there are safe alternatives.
the plastic bottles that usually contain mineral water or soft drinks (i just checked the coke one in my fridge) are made of plastic #1. these are particularly harmful and its best if you use them only once (:
hope that gave you guys a clearer understanding of the plastics that we used everyday! take care!

on my way home today i passed by a van. the driver stuck his head out and commented "so tired! you look."
the fact that i only registered that a few seconds after i walked away says a bit about how tired my brain must have been. didnt know strangers could see it from my face though o.o

love. is so much like minesweeper.
some people search for mines to blow themselves up.
just for the thrill.
some just want to check at the squares.
click, click.
boom.
the more discerning ones, learn.
read the signs.
bury the mines.
in the end, is it just a game?

if you were here (or rather, at the old url) about 3 years back, you may rmb i gushed about starting a new scarf. well, today, it is finally done! after like a gazillion hiatuses. :D if i hadnt been reminded about it by the scarf biang and i saw at cotton on the other day, this one prob would have gone unfinished for another eon or so again.
the one on the right is my first one, the one on the left is my second and the one i finished today. yay the squares look so cute!
unfortunately i still have enough of the blue yarn to make like 3 more scarves of the same length (long) or about enough short scarves to scarf my entire family lol. but it is good yarn (cashmere) and thus very very soft, and when i bought it i loved the pattern and i still do so i wouldnt mind working with it still. anybody interested in commissioning me to make one? xD
and since im currently bf-less, ill prob offer it to my daddy when he comes back again (he left ytd ): ), or keep it for myself ((:

the sis is outraged over the "betrayal" of an ex-rafflesian.
"we had an assembly talk on it. and cle. and english. AHHHHH!"
having not previously read the article, i hastened to look it up on google and
tada!its not as bad as i envisioned. then again, it
is written be an ex-rafflesian-cum-journalist, so i guess shes been well educated on how to properly disclaimer herself
without softening on the criticism.
of course, every once in a 15 seconds, this kind of a thing pops up, evoking passionate responses from both sides of the fence - the current rafflesians, plus their ardent supporters (made of mostly alumni, because lets face it few other people will feel as maligned by such claims) vs well, the people who feel "concerned" enough about this apparently extremely worrying "elitist" behaviour! (will not mention what
kind of people, because that is just bitchy)
personally, i can neither agree nor disagree with such claims (gp winz). but i can say, HELLO, REHASH HOW MANY TIMES ALR?!?! i meanz, are people not tired over this debate? the rgs girl date neighbourhood school boy controversy. the "get out of my elite uncaring face" wsm controversy. the
everyday discrimination rafflesians feel.
does it ever occur to the public that some rafflesians are NOT like that? that some rafflesians LIKE being rafflesians because they are PROUD of its heritage, and the opportunities they have been given as rafflesians? that THERE EXISTS RAFFLESIANS WHO DO NOT "LIVE IN A BUBBLE"? these people do not individually reflect the supposed elitist rafflesian, yet are forced to endure, throughout their 6 years in the system, the frequent criticism directed
specifically to their school.
of course, Ms Leong took the time to point out very carefully in her article that not all rafflesians are like that. but it is fallacious to assume that all members of the public are as discerning.
its really very exhausting sigh. and sometimes, it makes me afraid to go out in my uniform, which i am supposed to be
proud of wearing, because who knows how many people will be "rubbed the wrong way" and think that you are "brandishing (your) elite school background"?! (but i think it also says something about your peers/ future colleagues if they view you negatively just because you choose to wear a damned t-shirt)
sure, there are rafflesians that are extremely wrapped up in their own world. in fact, just today i had a moment when this unfortunate idea struck me. but i refuse to believe that these people do not exist in all other kinds of schools (not limited to the "elites") and i find is unfair that this kind of criticism is so often levelled at my school. in fact, a parent once thanked me for my help during an rg openhouse and in the same sentence, commented about how surprised she was that i was so helpful since everyone says that rafflesians are arrogant, unfeeling, elitist people. how am i supposed to be happy with comments like that when i know if it were any other school that person who have just left the last part out?
AM SICK AND TIRED OF THIS DISCUSSION.

yay!
i am so happy now because i just went swimming and that act in itself deserves a PAT ON THE BACK -pat!- good job jo! plus, the water was so nice and clean and bright and clean and clean and there was nobody but me in the big big warm clean pool :D yayyyy. i like swimming alone you dont have to think about water traffic, but you do have to worry about what happens if you drown and nobody will be there to save you! O: which is why i dont like swimming alone at night because it is dark and creepy and i keep thinking about the poor little boy who drowned in the pool many years ago and wonder if he will forever haunt the pool. i hope not. he should go into the light.
the only thing i really do not like about swimming is that i always look like a drowned cat when i come out )): terribly unglam ): -end of bimbotic moment-
(oh and i just calculated the estimated amount of calories i burn by swimming and its like 183 which is horrendously low. but i dont care because i do not swim for calories if i did i would run instead. it just makes me happy!)
edit: if any of you are interested in the number of calories you burn doing things i found this very cute
calculator and includes everything from brushing teeth to sex xD but i wouldnt be so concerned about the number crunching if i were you ((:

im not a big fan of stories with morals (because, sadly, most of them are not very eloquent, and im elitist like that), but i thought this one was quite clever, and it really made me think.
for those who were particularly upset by this ct results, and for those (like myself) who will be receiving more blows tmr.

A young woman went to her mother and told her about her life and how things were so hard for her. She did not know how she was going to make it and wanted to give up. She was tired of fighting and struggling. It seemed that as one problem was solved, a new one arose.
Her mother took her to the kitchen. She filled three pots with water and placed each on a high fire. Soon the pots came to a boil. In the first, she placed carrots, in the second she placed eggs, and the last she placed ground coffee beans. She let them sit and boil, without saying a word.
In about twenty minutes she turned off the burners. She fished the carrots out and placed them in a bowl. She then pulled the eggs out and placed them in a bowl. Then she ladled the coffee out and placed it in a bowl.
Turning to her daughter, she asked, "Tell me, what do you see?"
"Carrots, eggs, and coffee," she replied.
She brought her closer and asked her to feel the carrots. She did and noted that they were soft. She then asked her to take an egg and break it. After pulling off the shell, she observed the hard-boiled egg. Finally, she asked her to sip the coffee. The daughter smiled as she tasted its rich aroma.
The daughter then asked, "What does it mean, Mother?"
Her mother explained that each of these objects had faced the same adversity -- boiling water -- but each reacted differently. The carrot went in strong, hard and unrelenting. However, after being subjected to the boiling water, it softened and became weak. The egg had been fragile. Its thin outer shell had protected its liquid interior. But, after sitting through the boiling water, its inside became hardened. The ground coffee beans were unique, however. After they were in the boiling water, they had changed the water.
"Which are you?" she asked her daughter. "When adversity knocks on your door, how do you respond? Are you a carrot, an egg, or a coffee bean?"

with the upcoming sports season, everyones been clamouring to Get Fit. so i too decided its an opportune time for me to get my flabby inertia-filled ass out of the chair and into the pool. its been working out well so far, considering my tendency for sporadic exercising urges driven primarily by the Lou Feng Potato Chip Cycle* (LFPCC). hopefully, this will at last be a sustained practice, although perhaps once school reopens the will (and time and energy) to drag myself down to the pool once a day will diminish.
Jo's Guide to LFPCCThe LFPCC is primarily a psychological cycle and hormonal changes may or may not (depending on the individual) play a role. The frequency of each cycle differs from person to person, and the length of each cycle may even differ to round to round, thus making the LFPCC extremely difficult to predict.
LFPCC alternates between two phases - that of physical fitness, and that of physical... un-fitnesss. The first day of the LFPCC occurs when, fed up with the degeneration of his/ her physique, an individual is forced into voluntary vigorous exercise. This may continue for a few days. Once the individual has obtained satisfactory fitness, he or she stops exercise. This marks the beginning of the second phase of LFPCC.
During the second phase of the LFPCC, the individual may lose considerable muscle mass, resulting in a form that is skinny, but flabby - a generally unhealthy and disgusting state that resembles a stale potato chip, thus its name.
Note: LFPCC does not occur in all individuals.
