having not previously read the article, i hastened to look it up on google and
tada!its not as bad as i envisioned. then again, it
is written be an ex-rafflesian-cum-journalist, so i guess shes been well educated on how to properly disclaimer herself
without softening on the criticism.
of course, every once in a 15 seconds, this kind of a thing pops up, evoking passionate responses from both sides of the fence - the current rafflesians, plus their ardent supporters (made of mostly alumni, because lets face it few other people will feel as maligned by such claims) vs well, the people who feel "concerned" enough about this apparently extremely worrying "elitist" behaviour! (will not mention what
kind of people, because that is just bitchy)
personally, i can neither agree nor disagree with such claims (gp winz). but i can say, HELLO, REHASH HOW MANY TIMES ALR?!?! i meanz, are people not tired over this debate? the rgs girl date neighbourhood school boy controversy. the "get out of my elite uncaring face" wsm controversy. the
everyday discrimination rafflesians feel.
does it ever occur to the public that some rafflesians are NOT like that? that some rafflesians LIKE being rafflesians because they are PROUD of its heritage, and the opportunities they have been given as rafflesians? that THERE EXISTS RAFFLESIANS WHO DO NOT "LIVE IN A BUBBLE"? these people do not individually reflect the supposed elitist rafflesian, yet are forced to endure, throughout their 6 years in the system, the frequent criticism directed
specifically to their school.
of course, Ms Leong took the time to point out very carefully in her article that not all rafflesians are like that. but it is fallacious to assume that all members of the public are as discerning.
its really very exhausting sigh. and sometimes, it makes me afraid to go out in my uniform, which i am supposed to be
proud of wearing, because who knows how many people will be "rubbed the wrong way" and think that you are "brandishing (your) elite school background"?! (but i think it also says something about your peers/ future colleagues if they view you negatively just because you choose to wear a damned t-shirt)
sure, there are rafflesians that are extremely wrapped up in their own world. in fact, just today i had a moment when this unfortunate idea struck me. but i refuse to believe that these people do not exist in all other kinds of schools (not limited to the "elites") and i find is unfair that this kind of criticism is so often levelled at my school. in fact, a parent once thanked me for my help during an rg openhouse and in the same sentence, commented about how surprised she was that i was so helpful since everyone says that rafflesians are arrogant, unfeeling, elitist people. how am i supposed to be happy with comments like that when i know if it were any other school that person who have just left the last part out?
AM SICK AND TIRED OF THIS DISCUSSION.
